On April 19, 2022, the International Culture Federation (ICF) held its second salon forum at Gallery M2 in Improve Canada. The theme of the event was “Exploring Coins: The Large Coins of the Qing Xianfeng Era in Xinjiang.” The forum featured coin collector Mr. Dai Zechang and Manchu language expert Dr. Timur, was hosted by Ms. Maggie Yu, and co-sponsored by CYCA and ACPN.
Mr. Dai presented specimens from his collection of large Xianfeng-era coins minted in Xinjiang, introducing the historical background of their casting. He explained in detail how the history of coinage in Xinjiang was closely linked to the Qing dynasty’s strategy of governing the region. Unlike the standard cash coins circulated in inland provinces, Xinjiang’s coins differed not only in color but also in form, inscriptions, and weight. Mr. Dai and Dr. Timur further explained from an academic perspective how Xinjiang coins were arranged according to hierarchies of Han script, Manchu script, and symbolic inscriptions. Mr. Dai noted that one method of authenticating coins was through the study of their inscriptions. He also emphasized a regional distinction: north of the Tianshan Mountains, coins were cast in brass, while south of the Tianshan, coins were cast in red copper—reflecting the local practice of smelting copper with available resources.
The audience listened attentively to the discussion. Mr. Dai’s in-depth presentation on the uniqueness of Xinjiang’s coins aroused great curiosity, prompting a stream of questions from the floor:
-
“How were these coins acquired?”
-
“How can their authenticity be verified?”
-
“How many types of scripts appear on Xinjiang coins?”
-
“What is the current market recognition of Uyghur coins? Approximately how many collectors are there? What is the market value of these coins?”
Mr. Dai patiently addressed each question, drawing on his extensive knowledge of ancient coinage to provide clear and thorough answers. His detailed explanations not only satisfied the participants’ curiosity but also greatly enhanced their ability to appreciate the artistic and historical value of ancient coins.
