On May 17, 2022, the International Culture Federation (ICF) hosted its sixth salon lecture at Gallery M2, Improve Canada. This session focused on the theme “How to Apply for Signature Membership in the Canadian Artists Associations” and featured two distinguished speakers: Dr. Yidan and artist Chunxiao Zhao, with Ms. Foresthill Rose serving as moderator. The event was co-organized with CYCA and the Association of Certified Professional Nutritionists (ACPN).
Painter Chunxiao Zhao, a free-spirited artist deeply inspired by real-life experiences, shared insights into his creative philosophy, emphasizing the role of freedom in artistic expression. With his refined demeanor, broad knowledge, and fluent English, he has successfully integrated into Canada’s mainstream art community and now holds multiple prestigious memberships:
-
Signature Member of the Society of Canadian Artists
-
Signature Member of the Ontario Society of Artists
-
Board Member and Chair of Art & Design Programs, Toronto Watercolour Society
-
Vice President of the Atlantic Artists Association
-
Board Member of the Canadian Oil Painters Society
-
Member of the Scarborough and Tanggu Art Clubs
During the lecture, Zhao provided a comprehensive overview of Canadian artist associations—both Chinese and Western—comparing their features, resources, and membership benefits. Drawing from his own journey, he offered step-by-step guidance on how to apply, prepare portfolios, meet membership requirements, and navigate challenges. Special attention was given to the process of applying for Signature Membership in the Society of Canadian Artists and the Ontario Society of Artists, offering attendees a practical “roadmap” to success.
The lecture sparked strong interest from participants, many of whom expressed that the session served as a clear and practical guidebook for artists seeking membership in Canadian art institutions. Questions were raised about language barriers faced by Chinese artists, to which Dr. Zhao responded that each case required careful planning and preparation of suitable works and documentation.
This inspiring event was jointly organized by the ICF executive team and the ICF Artists Club, furthering the Federation’s mission to connect cultures, support artists, and foster international exchange.
